Submission Fee Increase (Posted: 24 February 2009)
As a result of the success of the Journal of Maps since it's launch in 2004, there has been a significant increase in the administrative work placed upon the journal. As a charity and independent publisher, the costs of all stages of publication are born directly by the journal. The journal is open access and therefore all running costs come from the submission fee levied against authors. This was set at £30 in 2004 and has remained at that level through to the beginning of 2009. However it is now necessarily to increase this fee in order to meet our ongoing committments. The new fee has been set at £50.
Journal of Maps to be available in Thomson Reuters Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index (Posted: 18 February 2009)
The Journal of Maps is pleased to announce that it's application has been accepted (pending technical evaluation of the journal’s electronic format) for inclusion in the following Thomson Reuters products beginning with volume 1, 2005:

Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) including the Web of Science
    ISI Alerting Service
    Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)
    Current Contents/Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences (CC/PC&ES)
    Current Contents/Social & Behavioral Sciences

Indexing is scheduled for later in 2009. This is an important step for the journal and remained a high priority in our development. Not only does it show the establishment of the journal internationally, but also significantly increases our exposure to researchers across the world. For organisations that require citation listing, authors will now be able to submit manuscripts for publication.
Journal of Maps to be available from EBSCO Publishing (Posted: 28 January 2009)
The Journal of Maps has recently entered into a content licensing relationship with EBSCO Publishing, the world's most prolific aggregator of full text journals, magazines and other sources. EBSCO distributes the full text, via subscription to libraries, of over 77,000 periodicals, reference books and databases. Keyword search databases enable the user to retrieve items at the article or chapter level. The full text of the Journal of Maps will soon be available on EBSCO Publishing's databases.
Best Map Award (Posted: 7 January 2009)
As JoM has grown since it was first published in 2005 we have established a back catalogue of 91 articles (including editorials), with maps covering many countries and, indeed, planets. From 2008 we have initiated a "Best Map" award to be presented to the single best contribution to the journal in the year it was published. Contributions are judged upon both their academic content \textit{and} cartographic quality. It is neither the best academic paper nor the best designed map, but a combination of qualities from both areas. The winners of the award will, where financially and technically feasible, see their map published as part of a limited 1000 copy print run which will be made available for sale "at cost".

It is with great pleasure that we are able award the 2008 "Best Map" to Eva Sahlin and Neil Glasser at the Centre for Glaciology, Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, Aberystwyth University, for their publication titled:

Sahlin, E.A.U. and Glasser, N.F. (2008) Geomorphological map of Cadair Idris, Wales, Journal of Maps, v2008, 299-314.

This map is the result of extensive and detailed field mapping and aerial photo interpretation of the Cadair Idris upland area in mid-Wales, forming the core of Eva's PhD thesis. It represents a significant amount of work and will be used to develop further insights in to the operation of former ice cover in the region. It is therefore a significant contribution to geomorphology and glaciology, as well as an exemplar of cartographic design.
Call for Papers: National Social Maps (Posted: 14 December 2008)
We would like to invite contributions to a special edition of the Journal of Maps devoted to cNational Social Maps. The broad theme is mapping of value added social data covering a whole country. We are interested in maps which show clear and distinct socio-geographic patterns, we are especially interested in:

The mapping of previously unmapped data and indices
Non-standard representations of space such as cartograms
    New and non-standard geographies
New and innovative ways of mapping social data

To submit a paper, authors should do the following:

    1. Submit a short draft (500 word limit) outlining the key themes and scope of the paper, where possible including example mapping, by 30th April 2009, to Dan Vickers.
    2. Submit a completed paper (2500 word limit) to the Journal of Maps by 31st July 2009.
    3. The special edition will be published in March 2010.

Reviewers are happy to discuss ideas for papers and their suitability with potential contributors prior to the short draft submission stage. Please email Dan Vickers (d.vickers@sheffield.ac.uk) in in the first instance.
Metadata collection and archival (Posted: 06 August 2008)
the Journal of Maps is pleased to welcome Tony Mathys (EDINA) as the metadata officer. Authors wishing to publish data with their article/map will be required to complete a short metadata record that will accompany the data itself. The metadata record is standards compliant and will be archived at GoGeo.
Journal of Maps Archival (permanent news item)
The Journal of Maps has been asked to participate in the UK Web Preservation Programme. The programme has been selecting sites, as part of initial trials, to represent aspects of UK documentary heritage that will remain available to researchers in the future. With JoMs Creative Commons licensing model, and strict PDF publishing, a complete archived copy of the journal will be stored in the British Library's permanent collections.

The Journal of Maps also mirrors all of its content at the UK Mirror Service. This is a complete copy of our data directories and is the most up-to-date archive of our collection.
Publication of Data (permanent news item)
The submission guidelines detail that the Journal of Maps is able to publish research data alongside the article. Examples include Stokes et al and Dunlop and Clark. Data deposition and data repositories are of increasing importance in funded research, however if the data "follows the article" then the benefits of "immediacy" are both data preservation and dissemination of outputs. Mike Smith (editor) details some of these points in a blog on data publication.
Maps Pending Publication (permanent news item)
The Journal of Maps realises that spatial output underpins much research and that authors often wish to publish in tandem both the cartographic output, as well as the interpretations based upon them. The latter usually form part of a research paper in a subject specific journal. To aid this process, the Journal of Maps is happy to receive and review map submissions and then temporarily withold the maps from publication (for a period of upto 1 year) until authorised to do so by the authors. If you would like to know more about this process please email the editor.
Open Access and Copyright (permanent news item)
Creative Commons Licence JoM is dedicated to open-access publishing, whilst protecting the work of the journal and the author. To this end, whilst all our material is copyright, we operate within the framework of Creative Commons, a non-profit organisation dedicated to flexible protections/freedoms. Please follow the link (right) to see our license and read this page for a more detailed discussion.
Submission of Maps Incorporating Ordnance Survey Data (permanent news item)
Due to copyright restrictions of OS data, we are currently unable to publish maps licensed through EDINA. Please read this page to find a more detailed discussion.
